First 5 Minutes: The International

Because of director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola, Run) and the cast of Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, The International jumped onto LiC radar as one to watch out for in 2008. Alas, it got bumped to February of 2009 and neither of the original trailers did much to make it look like anything more than a routine thriller. Reviews out of the Berlin International Film Festival have been mixed.

Now with the movie’s release just a few days away, the first 5 minutes of the film have turned up on MSN.

It’s a more interesting glimpse than the trailers, but I’m still cautious.

Owen plays an Interpol agent investigating the world’s largest banking institutions. Watts plays the Manhattan assistant DA whom he teams up with. The International finally opens on Friday, February 13th.

  1. I want this movie not to suck but those trailers are just so completely awful. Who knows? Anyway, it might be a decent weekend at the movies to pair this one up with Duplicity. All Clive all the time.

  2. I like what I’m seeing from this five minute clip a lot more than the trailers. As I’ve said all along, director and cast ensure I’ll be there, but my expectations are pretty modest.

  3. YOW.

That was…TAUT. And CLIVE looks so haunted.

I was wavering on the fence regarding this (a place I’m never comfortable with – I’m a very black and white chick), but this looks like it might be intriguing or fun at the very least.

Craig, I think I’m gonna go too. I’m not going to be in town this weekend. But I can always see it before I leave or Sunday night on the way back.

My expectations are rather modest as well. Thanks for posting this.

I firmly believe in taking chances. Sometimes the surprises you get are just lovely…

  4. Low expectations sometimes lead to the highest satisfaction. But then saying that the expectations already start creeping up….

  5. I’ve yet to see any clip or trailer for this (including this one), but based on comments here and there I’m essentially expecting a complete disaster of a movie.

Which hopefully won’t be the case.
