The Muriels: Best Lead Performance (Female)

Take me to The Muriels
Another 2007 Muriel Poster

First up for the Muriels tonight is another group of Also-Rans, this time in the performance categories.

Next is Muriel’s pick for the Best Female Lead Performance. Here how I voted:

  1. Meryl Streep – Doubt
  2. Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road
  3. Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married
  4. Sally Hawkins – Happy-Go-Lucky
  5. Kristin Scott Thomas – I’ve Loved You So Long

And the winner is…

  1. “Is that you, darling?” Nice touch.

I’m sure Muriel looks as fabulous in a chiffon nightgown as Grace Kelly.

  2. I really like how you voted here, Craig. Bravo.

  3. I can’t help thinking of the ads for the remake everytime “Dial M for Murder” comes up now…”That isn’t happiness to see me.” My mom loved both versions and she’d quoted it quite a few times before she gave up trying to get me to watch the remake.

Yep, all perfectly good choices and I agree with fully your #1 pick there Craig. As much as I liked the others and they’re all deserving of awards, Meryl owned it in 2008. She was amazing in Doubt, elevating an otherwise OK movie to something far more interesting.

I kinda love that Jim Emerson did an Also-ran for the dog. That was cool.

  4. Muriel surprises again. :-)

  5. I applaud the Muriels again for their choice of ANNE HATHAWAY, who gave a tremendous performance. Even the very few critics who didn’t like the film thought her acting superlative.

    My own choices:

    1. Galina Vishnevskaya (Alexandra)*
    2. Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky)
    3. Asia Argento (The Last Mistress)
    4. Kate Winslet (The Reader)
    5. Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)

Both Meryl Streep (Doubt) and Jeanne Balibor (The Dutchess of Langlaise) pushed very close for me. And Kate Winslet’s “Revoultionary Road” turn is of course excellent as well.

Craig’s list is superb of course, as all of his lists have been.

    * Oddly, Ms. Vishnevskaya did not appear on the Muriel list at all, leading me to believe that few have seen the film

  6. I haven’t yet seen the films showcasing Muriel’s first 3 picks. All I can say is that they must have been outstanding to top Kate W in Revolutionary Road.

  7. I’m no psychotherapist, but Hathaway’s work in RGM gets points for believability.

  8. Galina Vishnevskaya is an inspired choice, Sam. She would have actually been my #6. I probably should have placed her in my five so she could at least have had one vote.
