Natasha Richardson, Actress: 1963 – 2009
I was saddened to read yesterday that Natasha Richardson had died following Monday’s ski accident in Montreal. There are dozens of obituaries out there that sum up her too-short life much better than I can. Here’s one.
Her biggest successes may have been on the stage, but I will always remember her best for a film I discovered at an impressionable age in high school. It was my first real encounter with Ken Russell. The movie was Gothic and it might not have been Russell or Richardson’s best, but it marked me and expanded my understanding of how a movie can unsettle you for the better.

This is simply a horrifying tragedy, and so senseless. It’s too painful to ponder.
I’ve always loved her as Sally Bowles in the revival of “Cabaret” opposite Alan Cumming. She was a beautiful, elegant presence and will be missed.
NATASHA was a gorgeous dream who was with us for but a brief moment.
She left a wondrous legacy and she will be eternally missed.
RIP, my beauty…
I feel incredibly sorry for her, her husband, and her family. What a tragedy, especially considering it appeared to be a minor injury at first. I can’t imagine the guilt and second-thoughts they must be suffering over the outcome of this.
Horrible. Great actress though. I remember her best for The Handmaid’s Tale but she was good in Gothic too.
I meant to type “needless guilt” there. There’s no reason any of them should second-guess themselves, but I fear they are.
Yeah this one has me bummed out all around. Shocking for her age and its suddenness.
