McPaper teases ‘Sherlock Holmes’

USA Today’s Susan Wloszczyna visited the Brooklyn set of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and came away with some new photos plus re-assertions by the cast and filmmaker that the film will be an action-oriented update for 2009 yet remain respectful to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective.

According to Ritchie, Holmes practices Bartitsu, a Japanese martial art developed on the streets of London in the 1800’s and mentioned by Holmes in The Adventure of the Empty House.

Says Jude Law who plays Watson, “The physicality, the bare-knuckle fighting, the martial arts are all hinted at in the books. We just hold a magnifying glass over them. A word that Conan Doyle uses an awful lot is ‘apprehended.’ As in, ‘Holmes and Watson apprehend the villain.’ We get to show the apprehension.”

With Ritchie at the helm and the stated aim to present a more athletic Holmes, it’s tempting to assume that this Holmes will turn into Sherlock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but the cast gives me hope they’ll get it right.

For better or for worse, Sherlock Holmes, the first of what Warner Bros. hopes could become an ongoing franchise, opens on December 25. The trailer will premiere before Terminator Salvation which opens May 21.

  1. Well, everyone knows I’m in the tank for this one because of a certain guy appearing in it. ;-)

Also, here is a great little video that a kind movie buff put together. Both NCfOM and TWBB made the cut. :D

  2. “A word that Conan Doyle uses an awful lot is ‘apprehended.’ As in, ‘Holmes and Watson apprehend the villain.’ We get to show the apprehension.”

Ironic, because this news fills ME with apprehension about this movie, but really no more so than I had before I read it. If they are remaining true to the source material, great. I hope it’s great, but I can’t help but feel like this isn’t a great idea.

Anything with Jude Law AND Robert Downey Jr does get me excited though.

  3. Yeah, I’m letting my cynicism over this one go, at least until we see the trailer. Hopes high – expectations low. I can’t lose.

That’s a great package Alison. I’m a sucker for those things.

  4. Yeah, I could argue with some of what this person included and what got left out in this montage of greatest lines, but I was definitely entertained by that video.

And I have the same approach: high hopes, low expectations. The film could really blow but Downey is always charismatic and a joy to watch for me. Here’s hoping it beats our expectations. :)

  5. There’s always a quibble or two. I just like getting a taste of all these movies. Lotsa smiles.

I don’t hold the Holmes character close to my heart per se, but if they wanted to do James Bond, then they should’ve made their own. But I understand the urge for “branding” that the studios are addicted to.

  6. I think this may be a very fresh surprise. If not, it’ll make for a lot of goofy fun at Christmastime. Costume wise it seems very authentic.

I have a tradtion about seeing JUDE LAW movies on my birthday. It hasn’t been possible for quite some time. There hasn’t been any product of that type out at that time of year.

So it looks as if 2009 will have a interesting conclusion.

    At the very least…

  7. “We get to show the apprehension.”

I think that’s what Chris Columbus said about YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES

  8. Yeah, but you have to admit it was really cool when the stained-glass knight came to life.

  9. Well at that point, I assumed any resemblance to Sherlock Holmes was purely an accident…
