We’re always on the lookout for good sci-fi and for interesting animation that doesn’t come from Disney or DreamWorks, so we were intrigued by the trailer for Shane Acker’s 9 that played before Coraline last February…that is until that irritating Coheed and Cambria song kicked in. We’re hoping the song was only used for the trailer and nothing like it will be in the actual movie except maybe over the closing credits.

Expanded from Acker’s 2005 Academy Award nominated short film, 9 tells the story of a group of rag dolls who have been brought to life in a post apocalyptic world where all humans are gone and the only thing that remains are some nasty machines bent on destruction.

9 has a voice cast that includes Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, John C. Reilly and Crispin Glover. It opens on 9/9/09.

Check out Acker’s short film after the jump.

  1. I really liked the short when I first saw it a few months ago, something halfway between the brothers Quay and old school Tim Burton. I knew that they were adding a voice cast and extending this out to feature length, which ostensibly is what Acker was gunning for all along. But the trailer for this feels like it’s lost the spirit of what Acker had originally achieved and become just another mainstream movie. I hope not, and again, this may be the larger story Acker intended to tell all along but it just feels like someone came along and tacked on some explosions and added a backstory and away they went. I can’t help feeling disappointed.

  2. As I said above, I’m hoping the trailer over-emphasizes the action bits and that the final film won’t have that infernal CaC song until the end, if at all.

Since it’s not from a big studio, I’m encouraged to think Acker will have been allowed to remain true to his vision, but we’ll see.
