‘Antichrist’ uncensored in the UK

Antichrist

With its scenes of genital mutilation, it was assumed that the most talked about film at Cannes this year could not be released to the public without some editing, but distributors and censors in the UK are apparently a little more enlightened. James Dennis is reporting for Twitch that Lars Von Trier’s controversial Antichrist has been granted an “18 certificate” (similar to an NC-17 rating in the US) without any cuts being made…which I suppose is more than can be said of the character in the film played by Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Dennis quotes the UK distributor of the film:

“There is no doubt that Antichrist is a controversial film but it’s our duty as a distributor to present the works of talented directors such as Lars Von Trier in their original form exactly as the director intended.  We fully support the BBFC’s decision to allow people to make up their own minds about this film.”

Will the MPAA and US distributor IFC be so enlightened?

Somehow, I doubt it.

Antichrist starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg opens July 24 in the UK. A release date for the US hasn’t been announced.

  1. I imagine it will be released unrated here. Most of IFC’s films are, now, anyway.

  2. Speculation is that they’ll edit it for VOD though, isn’t it?
