Christmas presents to be tied with a ‘White Ribbon’

The White Ribbon
“But I vant to see ze Chipmunk movie.”

Sony Pictures Classics has announced they will release Michael (Cache) Haneke’s Palme d’Or winning The White Ribbon on December 25, 2009.

Its competition so far? The Chipmunks sequel, a crappy Nancy Meyers romantic comedy and Sherlock Holmes.

  1. Well it did well at Cannes so it’s no surprise that they’re opening it right in Oscar season.

Oh, and the caption is priceless. :)

  2. I don’t know. Cannes and Oscar don’t seem to match up very well in the last few years. Cannes is a little too highbrow. Clearly though SPC has that in mind.

I wish I was more enthusiastic about Haneke, but I’m still looking forward to this one. It sure beats Chipmunks and Nancy Meyers.

  3. True. And I’ll probably see Sherlock Holmes just because of RDJ.

  4. I’m still looking forward to that one, though with reservations. The trailer didn’t move me, but you know what I think about trailers. The draw of RDJ can’t be denied and frankly I like Jude Law and Rachel McAdams a lot too.

  5. Enough knocking on Nancy Meyers. Sure, the Holiday felt more like a dismal work retreat, but Something’s Gotta Give was really enjoyable. I mean Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin together in a film? Not too shabby. As for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, I’ll be there for the cast. RDJ can do no wrong.

  6. I think Nancy Meyers is awful, a creator of fetishy entitled-rich sitcom porn in which a person’s house has far more dramatic value than anything the people are saying. Meyers is also irritating because her premises are generally promising, but she softens them as much as she possibly can. Jack can’t fuck Amanda Peet in the beginning, because that would be too icky when he falls for Keaton. Mel, granted many men’s dreams, can’t continue to use it for his own purposes, no he has to learn his lesson so as to be able to sell women tennis shoes (the picture tells us the way to a woman’s heart is not through honesty and decency – but simply through better, more educated bullshit, that’s a great satirical idea that she seems to take seriously).

The Holiday isn’t as bad in those kinds of terms, its just a boring movie adaptation of Better Homes and Gardens.

Sorry, Meyers is a pet peeve.

  7. I haven’t seen Something’s Gotta Give so I can’t comment really, but Nancy Meyers is a time-honored punching bag around here.
