Trailer: 2012

I hate Roland Emmerich. A lot. But I’ve also always been a huge sucker for disaster movies. All the cheesy Irwin Allen movies from the ’70s were manna for my tiny little brain.

If I’m going to be honest with you, I have to admit this trailer gets the 10-year-old inside of me a little excited.

Watch it at Yahoo if the streamage doesn’t work for you.

The editors were wise to mostly show eye-popping, epic carnage. They hope you’ll forget the fact that there will be a whole movie in between the carnage and it will be horrible. They don’t succeed for long, but I’m really enjoying watching the trailer anyway. Even the nod to the massively overrated Independence Day near the end.

John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover and a bunch of other people star in the film scheduled for release on November 13th.

  1. Hey, this is The Towering Inferno for the new generation of kids.

    Yay carnage!

  2. I know! It’s going to be awful, but my inner 10-year-old will make me go. Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Meteor, Poseidon Adventure…Hell, I was even absorbed by Heat Wave!

    (sigh) Damn you Roland Emmerich!

  3. I can’t rationally explain it, but I actually have really liked as many Emmerich movies as I’ve disliked (Stargate, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow in the thumbs-up category, Godzilla, The Patriot, and 10,000 BC in the thumbs-down). I wish I could understand it.

  4. Independence Day had its moments. They were drowned out by stupidity, but if you’re able to ignore it, you’re well on your way to enjoying it.

At least we can happily agree that The Patriot is awful.

A more important question is: does this trailer do anything for you?

  5. I think if I smoked copious amounts of weed I would love this movie, because the intense high would get me through the idiocy that will be the parts in-between all these mind-blowing effects shots. But the salad days are behind me so yeah, as much fun as this trailer is, this will just be a mistake for me to bother with.

Looks cool, but I’ve seen enough Emmerich to know better. I wish you all good times though.

  6. “the intense high would get me through the idiocy”

The idiocy would become comic genius under such conditions. I’ve personally found all his movies disasters.

  7. Having now seen the trailer I have to say this appears no more than a reprise of his earlier formula. He might as well have simply edited together money shot FX moments from his other films with scenes using the new actors. I’d rather poke needles in my eyes than watch this film :-)

  8. hahaha….I feel where both of you are coming from believe me. I won’t come crying to either of you when I sneak into this one and it makes me really really angry.

I’ll have no one to blame but myself.

  9. You’re at peace with your own wretchedness.

  10. Craig, this trailer actually looks highly attractive to me. It reminds me of one of the big ’50s sci-fi movies that could actually use a remake, When Worlds Collide, down to the space-ark.

Very much looking forward to it now.

  11. I’m with you on the trailer though I expect my inner film snob will come through at the last and I’ll dislike the movie.

I’ve seen crap getting wrecked before and I’ve specifically seen Roland Emmerich wrecking crap before, but this looks and feels different. Better. The wrecking I mean…not the stuff in between.
