Trailer: The Invention of Lying

I’m almost afraid to run this trailer because I really want this movie to be great, but the trailer is…well…mostly wretched. Decide for yourself.

I’m reminded of the trailer for Ghost Town that was equally unpromising (well maybe a bit more promising than this), but turned out to be kind of good.

After that, we promised ourselves never to underestimate the comic powers of Ricky Gervais again.

[UPDATE: K found the US version of the trailer and it's samey, yet better. Check it out after the jump]

As you can see, Gervais plays a man living in a world where somehow lying hasn’t been thought of yet and he invents it. Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K., John Hodgman, Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, Nate Corddry, Patrick Stewart and Jason Bateman round out the talented cast.

The Invention of Lying opens September 25, 2009.

  1. The script I read (no idea what draft or any of that) was small but wonderful, exactly what you hope a Gervais co-directorial feature debut to be. I say that as someone who was quite taken with Ghost Town.

  2. That’s good to know, because Ghost Town turned out to be pretty good.

  3. Ahhhhhhhhhhh I haven’t watched it yet, but I am so excited! (And surprised you beat me to it.)

OK, not the best trailer, but, like you said, I’ve seen many bad trailers for fine filmes — Ghost Town, In Bruges, Pride & Prejudice (05) are the first ones that come to mind.

  4. Comedy trailers are particularly tricky to pull off…if they’re too good they risk ruining the movie.

I’m still on board this one, and Chuck’s comment just solidifies it.

  5. Chucks comment + Ricky’s past work as a writer/director does it for me.

Craig, you get that with drama too. Have you seen the new trailer for Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart’s new film? The trailer gives away the entire thing, it’s amazing.

  6. That’s ridiculous. Drama should be much easier to tease.

  7. This site has a better trailer:

  8. Yeah that as somehow a bit better. I’ve added it after the jump.
