Duncan Jones: From ‘Moon’ to ‘Mute’
Fresh off Moon winning the Michael Powell Award for the Best New British Feature at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, ScreenDaily spoke to Duncan Jones who confirms his next project is the sci-fi mystery-thriller Mute, a UK/German co-production budgeted at $25 million (roughly five times the budget of Moon).
According to Jones, “Mute is about a woman whose disappearance causes a mystery for her partner, a mute bartender. When she disappears, he has to go up against the city’s gangsters.”
Along with Mute, Jones discussed another project with Variety earlier this month. It’s called Escape from the Deep and it’s an adaptation of Alex Kershaw’s WWII story based on an actual incident where a US submarine was sunk by one of its own torpedoes and the crew had to escape from 180 feet of water while enemy ships dropped depth charges on them from the surface.
Though it wasn’t perfect, we’re fans of Moon and we’re curious to see what Jones can come up with using a larger budget.

I haven’t seen MOON, but since I’m fairly sure I’ll enjoy it at some level (perhaps like Craig did), I’m glad that Mr. Jones isn’t going away. Recently, filmmakers with interesting debuts seem to fall in a limbo afterwards, for whatever reason.
Sounds like Jones is hitting the ground running.
Moon I thought showed a lot of promise and I like the look and feel of these other projects.
I read somewhere that he compared Mute to sort of a Blade Runner type future, though he was careful not to draw a direct link.
