Premature Avatarulation

Avatar Banner

Enthusiasm for James Cameron’s purportedly “game-changing” 3-D sci-fi extravaganza Avatar is running so high and eagerness for any detail is so great that screen caps of the video game spinoff aren’t enough. Now they’re running snapshots of advertising banners outside of the San Diego convention center hosting Comic-Con later this month.

Ok, so when I was a kid I had a C-3PO mask I’d cut off the back of a cereal box tacked to my wall, but in the words of Gob Bluth: “Come on!!”

  1. This wins blog title of the week.

  2. Yes, that is a great posting title. And yes, that is completely ridiculous. Maybe someone posted it because they thought they could see the face of the Virgin Mary on it.

  3. Nope, just a “Na’vi”

Seriously, this image went up allll over.

    Crazy.

  4. I’m curious about the extent to which Avatar’s FX is groundbreaking. I suspect Cameron will deliver on that front. A friend here in Wellington knows a couple of guys that worked on the film at Weta Digital and they were certainly singing its technical praises. But at the end of the day spectacle alone isn’t enough. Let’s hope he gives us a strong and engaging story too.

  5. That’s my whole beef with the hype, Sartre. Spectacle is great…I hope it makes me drool, but I’m past the age where that’s enough. If it delivers, I’ll be gushing along with everyone else, but don’t bother me with adverts for Nerd-Con

  6. There’s a reason why Comic Con put up those banners and there’s a reason why you’re posting it, Craig. You can’t give into the madness and claim to be above it. ;-)

You have to admit, that’s a pretty cool image; but I’m with the peanut gallery here. I’m not a big Cameron fan. His films always have impressive visuals, but the storytelling ability tends to fall short of his showmanship.

  7. Jeez WJ, can’t a fellow try to have it both ways without someone calling him out on the carpet for it? :)

I think with restraint, whether it’s the financial limitations of the first Terminator or the studio imposed limitations of Aliens, Cameron is great.

Alas, he can do whatever he wants now and I’m not convinced his storytelling instincts are always the sharpest.

Still, I hope Avatar turns out to be the greatest fanboy wet dream ever. I want it to be as good as everyone hopes.

Having said that, I don’t get enthused about comic-con ads and I think people are getting just a little bit carried away.

  8. “There’s a reason why Comic Con put up those banners…”

Sure, that long-standing comic book series it’s based on. Oh wait, it has nothing to do with a comic book.

Comic Con isn’t really about comic books anymore, which makes this post doubly-ironic. They should call it Media Orgasm Con.

  9. Fanboygasm. Actually, with Twilight, it’s also Fangirlgasm.
