‘Creation’ is a not-so-natural selection for Toronto opener

Organizers for the 34th Annual Toronto International Film Festival announced a new batch of films today including the opener, Jon Amiel’s Charles Darwin life story Creation starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly. This is a departure from the tradition of opening the festival with a Canadian production, but perhaps the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth is cause for an exception. Check out the UK trailer for Creation after the jump.

Other premieres announced include Ricky Gervais in The Invention of Lying, Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant! starring Matt Damon (listed as a North American premiere giving rise to assumptions it will premiere at Venice) and The Vintner’s Luck from Niki Caro (The Whale Rider).

In addition, several titles we’ve been tracking from other festivals have been added including Precious (Sundance), Bright Star (Jane Campion, Cannes), Mother (Bong Joon-ho, Cannes) and Vengeance (Johnnie To, Cannes).

The first slate of films was announced back in June and include the Cannes entries Les Herbes Folles (Alain Resnais), Air Doll (Hirokazu Kore-eda), Face (Tsai Ming-liang), Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold), Samson and Delilah (Warwick Thornton) and Police, Adjective (Corneliu Porumboiu)

  1. Well now, this is a very impressive lineup that holds much promise, what with the Darwin work with those talented stars, the Soderbergh, and the Ricky Gervais starrer. I liked Gervais in GHOST TOWN, and have alsways admited his work in THE OFFICE. But for some reason the Darwin film and FACE by Ming-Liang excite me the most of these.

  2. I want to see Bright Star. I want it to be good. Wish it may, wish it might.

Speaking of literary biopics, I laughed when I realized that Tim Blake Nelson’s film Leaves of Grass wasn’t one at all. Tim Blake Nelson and Walt Whitman didn’t seem nearly as good a fit as Tim Blake Nelson and a pot comedy.

  3. Nice line-up for this festival. I’m looking forward to seeing Precious and Bright Star. And of course The Informant is intriguing.

  4. Face got drubbed pretty well at Cannes, but I’m still excited about it.

I’m a bit sketchy on both Creation and Bright Star simply because of the biography angle. It’s so often a shortcut to mediocrity, but the potential for greatness is always there (hence I keep going to see them)

Everything about Precious seems revolting to me except that EVERYONE, even fanboy types who normally wouldn’t go near this kind of thing, has been raving about it. So, I’m sold.

  5. I’m honestly interested in seeing the performances in Precious, which have been raved over.

  6. I am too. I’m just surprised I’m interested.

  7. The marketing on Precious so far has been very interesting, so I’m hoping that accounts for some very smart people behind that film.

  8. Admit it Joel, you’re just impressed because Tyler Perry and Oprah loved it.
