Willem Dafoe teams up with ‘John Carter of Mars’

A Princess of MarsEver since it was announced that Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) would be making it his live-action directorial debut, LiC has been quietly monitoring John Carter of Mars, a film based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ eleven fantasy/adventure novels about a Civil War veteran who is transported to the Red Planet.

Having said that, news last month that Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins will star as John Carter and the Princess of Mars respectively barely made a blip on our radar because we had no idea who they were. Sorry. We’ve never watched Friday Night Lights, we skipped Wolverine and we don’t have cable so we’ve never seen True Blood either.

We’re very familiar with one Willem Dafoe however, so we note with interest Variety’s announcement that he’ll star as Tars Tarkas, a Martian warrior who allies himself with John Carter.

The first entry in what Disney surely hopes will become a huge franchise (truth be told we once assumed this was going to be another Pixar movie, hence our automatic interest) isn’t scheduled for release until 2012 and won’t even begin filming until November at the earliest, but consider us officially on board.

  1. Well who wouldn’t be excited about the teaming of Andrew Stanton and Edgar Rice Burroughs? The possibilities here are enticing. Count me in.

  2. I really was more excited when I thought it was a Pixar movie, but still.
