Trailer 2: Sherlock Holmes
Maybe it’s because my expectations have been lowered by the last trailer, but this one which is playing ahead of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a bit better. I’m ok with the fact you’d never know it was a Sherlock Holmes story if not for the helpful and flashy titling and I’m even ok with the boilerplate action trailer music. The 300-style action editing is still a huge warning sign, but at least this trailer conveys a sense of personality.
You know the drill: Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams opens December 25th.

I really want this to be good because of RDJ but I have my serious doubts about it. Will still see it of course.
I have seen the trailer a few times already over the past few weeks, and I guess at the end of the day we can never underestimate Downey. A good Sherlock Holmes is everbody’s cup of tea!
In all fairness, Ritchie was doing the super-fast/slo-mo thing long before Zach Snyder, so if anything he was getting ripped off I suppose. Doesn’t make it any less annoying now that the effect is thoroughly played out, but there’s that. Otherwise…sigh.
300-style editing? Ugh, I thought that died with Watchmen.
Well I’m not watching the trailer but the images in my head for these movie are increasingly closer to a JCVD movie than anything else, which isn’t a good sign.
Alison, I’m with you. I want this to be good which is why I can’t quite let go of it even though alarm bells are going off.
Joel, you’re right, but it’s not so much the idea of ripping off that bugs me, it’s just the technique feels horribly out of place in a movie set in Victorian England. I know the folks who liked the digital photography of 1930s America in Public Enemy would have to argue such a thing doesn’t matter, but even more so than PE, Holmes for me is all about flavor and this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
