Trailer: The Damned United

Damned United Trailer

Here’s the trailer for Tom Hooper’s The Damned United written by Peter Morgan (The Queen) and starring Michael Sheen (The Queen). It came out in the UK in March and was announced as a North American premiere at TIFF this morning.

I’m a little weary of the whole Peter Morgan/Michael Sheen thing and the ’70s UK football milieu doesn’t exactly set my boxers on fire, but Tom Hooper did fine work on John Adams and the rest of the cast including Colm Meaney, Timothy Spall and Jim Broadbent certainly demands attention.

I’ll be having a look at it in a couple of weeks and I’ll let you know how it turns out.

The Damned United opens in the US on September 25. Check the trailer out at Apple or YouTube it after the jump.

  1. Well Craig, I will admit that the talent on display here in front of an dbehind the camera does warrant some modest excitement. Meaney, Spall and Broadbent are among the finest actors today, so in tandem they will always generate enthusiasm with me. Morgan is a fine writer. I look forward to hearing of your advanced look.

  2. Yeah, even as someone that thinks that the Morgan/Sheen connection has only delivered admirable but not-great films, I have to say that I’m quite excited for this. Unlike their other entries, this looks like a loose picture with charming, harmless moments, and free of that poisonous Oscar expectative. And Tom Hooper seems like more than a capable director.

On another note, that last bit from Sheen in the trailer had an odd resonance to Johnny Depp’s Ed Wood in its naive, ignorant happiness, with frozen smile and all. But that’s just me.

  3. AV I think we’re exactly on the same page. The trailer even managed to overcome the hoary underdog sports movie cliche for the most part.
