Is 2009 an Apparition for Malick’s Tree of Life?

Hopes continue to be fanned in various corners of the internet that Terrence Malick’s 5th film The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn will hit theaters this year, but the truth is no one really knows – maybe not even Malick himself.

Today’s Variety, brings news that the new distribution company recently formed by Bill Pohlad and Bob Berney will be called Appartion and that Tree of Life will join Jane Campion’s Bright Star as the fledgling outfit’s first two titles.

Most interestingly in the report, Variety claims Tree of Life “will be released around the year-end holiday season.”

Meanwhile, in a report in THR on the same story, Steven Zeitchick says simply that a release date has not been announced.

A Winter ‘09 release makes a lot of  sense, but is it true? What we do know is that Malick will release his film when he’s good and ready.

Details on the project have been sketchy at best and I’ve managed to avoid all of them. It’s Malick and that’s all I need to know.

  1. Nice work avoiding the obvious Christmas Tree of Life headline.

I do hope this happens. Won’t it be the third holiday in a row that Pitt will have a starring turn in a lyrically shot drama released? Or was Assassination of Jesse James released earlier? Can’t remember.

  2. JJ was like….Sept or Nov? In LA anyway. The studio kind of dragged their feet on that one.

as for Malick, the New World was sort of a half-assed Holiday release. It came out in NY and LA on or around Christmas and then disappeared for a while and came back in an edited form. I hope the same fate doesn’t befall Tree.

  3. I don’t like pigeon-holing any filmmaker (I love, he cynically adds under his breath), but I always thought Malick releasing this by December 31, 2009 was a long shot.

I hope it happens, but I’ve always doubted it.

Jennybee–good thought, but The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was released in the early fall. I saw it in early October. Sadly, I’m afraid it was long gone from theatres by the time the holidays rolled around. :(

  4. I think The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was only in theaters for about 2 weeks. If you blinked you missed it. Unfortunately.

  5. Sadly, I’m afraid it was long gone from theatres by the time the holidays rolled around. :(

Alexander, you obviously are unfamiliar with Arkansas theaters. Count your blessings.

  6. Ah, okay. :)

  7. Yes, and this was after the studio kept JJ on a shelf for quite some time. They had no idea what to do with it.

Well I could definitely use a new Terrence Mallick film for Christmas, but as Craig pointed out, it probably wouldn’t get here until mid January at the earliest even if it were a Christmas release. I’m certain I’ll be watching this one in 2010.

  8. Even so Joel, Jan or Feb ‘10 is better than if they miss Oscar season this year. If they can’t squeeze it in for Oscar season this year, who knows how long they’ll wait into next year to come out with it?
