Von Trier to destroy planet with tidal wave of tears?

Vowing “No more happy endings!” controversial Danish auteur/shit stirrer Lars Von Trier announced his next project would be a $4.6 million English-language disaster movie called Planet Melancholia.

Screen Daily quotes Von Trier’s business partner Peter Aalbæk as saying the film will be in the spirit of Antichrist: “There will be spectacular images mixed up with handheld camera…but this time with no genitals being chopped off.”

He also adds that “there is a little bit of Lord Byron to it.”

Few other details have been announced but the LiC monkeys have discovered that the plot of the film will have the entire population driven to suicide when aliens replace all television programming with Breaking the Waves running on an endless loop.

Watch out, Roland Emmerich!

  1. Now that’s a disaster movie I can get behind. I doubt Von Trier will do anything so banal as threatening his leads with a giant doughnut of death. I’m not instantly expecting this to be good, but I doubt anyone in a Von Trier disaster film will be as sainted with preposterously good luck in the face of constant instant death as John Cusack and spawn are in 2012’s clips.

  2. I think it’s safe to say this will be as much of a disaster film as Antichrist is a horror film. It’ll play with the tropes but do its own thing.
