US Trailer: Broken Embraces

Broken Embraces trailer cap

I posted the UK trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces back in July and now Sony Pictures Classics has released the domestic version over at Apple.

It speaks for itself.

Broken Embraces starring Penélope Cruz, Lluís Homar, Blanca Portillo, José Luis Gómez, Rubén Ochandiano and Tamar Novas opens in theaters on November 20. Stream it after the jump.

  1. Love me some Almodovar. This looks brilliant so far. I’m not missing this for anything.

Though is it just me or do all apartments in Almodovar films look interchangeable?

  2. The movie was very entertaining and accomplished. Lots of playful nods in it for cinephiles to purr over. And Penelope will blow many a casket among the movie goers.

  3. Reviews out of the festivals and it’s European run I think have been modest. One guy (his name is really Guy) keeps insisting it’s “minor Almodovar” but you know that sounds suspiciously like a minor orgasm. Is the distinction really necessary or relevant? When something is good, one takes what one can get, no?

JB…the production design in general seems verrrry familiar. It’s like these places exist in a special Almodaverse.

  4. “And Penelope will blow many a casket among the movie goers.”

If anyone can raise the dead, sartre, it’s Cruz.

I, too, await our next Almodovary film.

Jennybee, the art direction in many of Pedro’s films indeed have a similar visual aesthetic, don’t they? I think it’s part Spain, part Pedro, just as other filmmakers cultivate a look, either unintentionally or, in many cases, intentionally. In Pedro’s case, I find inherent humor in it.

  5. I’m not generally an Almodova fan but I thought this was great fun.

The reviews have been generally positive Craig – RT 83% based on 35.

  6. Best trailer ever. Okay, since that awesome teaser for De Palma’s Body Double. But not even that one had Penelope Cruz in it, so this one still wins.

  7. It’s my favorite film of the year, and I don’t know if it’s really close. I adored it.

  8. Sartre I haven’t followed up on the reviews since Cannes. After that I tune out so I go in myself as fresh as possible. It’s not at all uncommon for a film to underwhelm there and then end up being beloved by me. I prefer to go in with low expectations when I can get away with it.

  9. BROKEN EMBRACES is one of Almodovar’s more subdued efforts. I liked it quite a bit in the moment but it doesn’t really stick with you the way a lot of his films do. It’s solid, and Cruz is in fine form, but it’s far from his best.

  10. Far from Almodovar’s best is still something to be seen in my book.

  11. You had me at “Penelope Cruz,” but Almodovar craps better movies than most directors even dream of, so I’m in.
