Nine: Rehearsal Montage

Nine

Now that critics have finally gotten a look at Mira Nair’s Amelia (responses so far are good and bad), Clint Eastwood’s Invictus and Rob Marshall’s musical Nine are two of the remaining big Oscar unknowns (update: I should’ve added Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, but frankly I just keep forgetting about that picture). They’ve got a lot of people excited, but no one has seen them yet.

Yahoo has a tantalizing glimpse at some behind the scenes footage of Nine blended with bits of the film. It’s all a part of The Weinstein Company’s plan to build hype for the film without making people sick of it. Clips and images have trickled out in dribs and drabs and each one is fawned over all around the internet, yet the film still feels like a mystery and it hasn’t worn out its welcome.

The adaptation of the Broadway musical based on Fellini’s 8 1/2 has a terrific cast including Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren. The cast, the genre and the pedigree make it an obvious choice for Oscar, but is it any good?

We’ll find out when the film opens on December 25th. Watch the rehearsal clip after the jump.

  1. What. A. Tease.

  2. You liked it. Admit it.

  3. This is one of the movies of 2009 that I’m most looking forward to even if I do hate the idea of giving money to Harvey Weinstein, who I think is a total dick.

But DDL, Marion Cotillard (who looks amazing in this montage), Penelope Cruz (her song A Call From the Vatican, which is the scene they’re showing, is one of the best moments in the show), Judi Dench, Sophia Loren…I could go on, but you get the point. This cast is amazing.

  4. Oh my GOD…

My birthday can’t come soon enough. How will I ever survive???

    Thanks for this, Monsieur Crabcake.

Now I’ll have to find a big fake fur coat like Nicole’s wearing in that clip.

So many desires. So little time…

  5. Now I’m almost hoping it opens that way, ala Jesus Christ Superstar.

Looks like Marshall is back in his Chicago-like comfort zone with Harvey Weinstein playing George Steinbrenner behind him. It’s not going after the World Championship, just Best Picture. :-)

  6. I’m beginning to worry that I might be gay for Daniel Day Lewis…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  7. Mea culpa, Craig. And, loathe as I am to admit it, there’s a thrill to seeing Sophia play la grande dame.

  8. LOL, Craig! Poor Clooney will be upset that you’ve abandoned him for DDL. :p

  9. lol Pierre. I’m relieved you’re helping keep the balance in the sexual universe.

Alison, I’m sure Clooney will pull through it.
