BIFA Nominations: Fish Tank 8, Moon 7

Double BIFA nominee Katie Jarvis in Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank
This is the part where we start pausing and mentioning just about every awards and festival recognition that comes across the transom.
Here are the British Independent Film Awards. Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, which I finally saw last night and will be writing about soon, got 8 nominatinos including Best British Independent Film, Director and Screenplay Andrea Arnold, Actress and Most Promising Newcomer Katie Jarvis, Supporting Actress Anne-Marie Duff, Supporting Actor Michael Fassbender and Best Technical Achievement for Robbie Ryan’s cinematography.
Duncan Jones’ terrific Moon netted 7 nominations including Best British Independent Film, Director, Debut Director, Screenplay Nathan Parker, Actor Sam Rockwell and Technical Achievement nominations for Clint Mansell’s score and Tony Noble’s production design.
Among the other Best British Independent Film nominees, In the Loop, An Education and the John Lennon flick Nowhere Boy received 6.
Meanwhile, JaneĀ Campion’s Bright Star received 4 nominations but was overlooked in the top category.
Last year, eventual Oscar juggernaut Slumdog Millionaire won the top BIFA prize. As good as it is, I doubt Fish Tank will get the same traction.
See the complete press release with a full list of nominees at the BIFA website.
