UK Poster: Cracks

Cracks

Cracks popped onto LiC radar when it premiered to decent reviews at Toronto in September and now Empire has the lovely UK quad featuring the beautiful Ms. Eva Green. In the film directed by Jordan Scott (Ridley’s Daughter), Green plays a teacher at a posh British boarding school in the 1930s.

Cracks will be looking for a US distributor at the American Film Market which begins November 4 in conjunction with AFI Fest. It opens in the UK in December.

UPDATE: Playlist took the time to seek out the trailer which is available on YouTube after the jump.

  1. I’m intrigued. Like the underbelly of girls school vibe. I think, like the Shutter Island trailer, that this one gives away too much, but then any time a trailer starts so idyllic, you know it’s going to turn dark soon.

Looks like Eva Green’s biggest role to date. Has she ever played more than the pretty love interest?

  2. Er, maybe I shouldn’t have said “girls school vibe.” That’s an entirely different movie, lol. Let’s go with “atmosphere.”

  3. Her part in The Dreamers was sizable, but hardly anyone saw that.

  4. I’ve never really thought of Green as the sort who simply plays the “pretty love interest”, to be honest. She was mostly decorative in THE GOLDEN COMPASS, sure, but she’s flat-out awesome in both THE DREAMERS and CASINO ROYALE. In fact, she’s my favorite Bond Girl, largely because she actually makes Vesper an honest-to-goodness character like she is in the book. Also, she has a lot more to do in the director’s cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN than in the theatrical version, and she’s up to the task.

Interestingly, Green has turned down chances to work with two of my favorite active filmmakers. In his recent Onion AV Club interview, Lars Von Trier said that she was his first choice for the “She” role in ANTICHRIST, back when he was looking to make the couple younger than they turned out to be. Supposedly Green declined the role due to some differences regarding the details of her contract, whatever that means.

In addition, she was Brian DePalma’s first choice for the part of Madeleine, which ended up being played by Hilary Swank, in the admittedly flawed but (in my eyes, anyway) sort of dazzling THE BLACK DAHLIA. Green said she turned down the part because she didn’t want to be typecast as the “femme fatale,” which I can understand. I can imagine Green being good in the role, and certainly a more natural fit than Swank was, although the way it played out onscreen I’m guessing DePalma wanted to play up the fact that Swank was play-acting. However, I would have been curious to see Eva as Kay (the Scarlett Johansson role). In the book- which is brilliant, by the way- Kay supplies the emotional heart of the story, since she’s running from a shady past and is trying to be good again. But Johansson can’t convey the sadness the role requires, nor can she managed the kind of stylized performance needed for the setting. I think Green could have done wonders with the role, even with her accent.

Also, she’s super hot. Just wanted to get that out there.

  5. I also came away from Black Dahlia kind of impressed. In the end, I sort of wish it had gone off the rails and gone batshit crazy a little sooner or had simply remained truer to the book…preferably the former.

Eva was a good Bond girl, but she’s still a Bond Girl. The fact that we call her a “Bond Girl” points out that not a lot is expected of them. Still you’re right. She’s maybe the most human one since Diana Rigg.

  6. “Also, she’s super hot. Just wanted to get that out there.”

I miss Screengrab’s Scarlett Johansson status updates (I realize you’re talking about Green, but that one could apply equally). Those always made me chuckle.

    By the way…Hello Paul!
