Nine: Yeah, but can Daniel Day-Lewis sing?
By Craig Kennedy - December 3rd, 2009; 2:26 pm
I don’t know. Decide for yourself. Here he is singing “Guido’s Song.”
After one listen out of the context of his visual performance in the film it doesn’t knock me out, but it’s fine. For me that might be enough.
Trailer Addict also has tunes from Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, and Sophia Loren.
UPDATE: There’s more. Day-Lewis again, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard + Cruz + Kidman + Kate Hudson + Fergie, Cotillard and Finale.

Craig, I needed some serious cheering up after the Grammy and NBR debacles. This was just perfect.
Yeah, I was a little trepidatious. They kept DDL’s singing under wraps for so long I was wondering if something was up.
Not a chance. He’s actually pretty damn good. My adoration of DDL continues unabated.
Judi’s game for anything. She just throws it out there. Awesome French phrasing. But she did play Sally Bowles in CABARET on stage.
Sophia is an absolute pleasure to listen to. Her voice is rich and mellow. She talks her way through it like Harrison did in MFL.
The only problem I had was (unsurprisingly) with Penelope. Fabulous part. Unfortunate that she got cast. It would have been much better with someone like Monica Bellucci.
A CALL FROM THE VATICAN and BE ITALIAN are probably the best songs. Penelope’s character Carla gets the former.
Well, she ain’t no Anita Morris or Jane Krakowski. She’s very difficult to understand with her fricking natural accent. She just mangles it ALL TO HELL.
Oy.
But I imagine it’s a small price to pay for something that seems like it’ll be the highlight of the Christmas season. If not the year.
Thanks, sweetie. I owe you for this.
Trailer Addict clips always come out garbled on my computer, so I can’t really tell. My guess is that DDL does at least as well as Zellweger in Chicago.
I’m glad this brightened your day Miranda, the Cruz clip notwithstanding.
I’m anxious to SEE DDL’s performance because I think it will add to it. As it stands, its’ not something I’d want to sit around listening to on a Friday night, but it’s solid. It certainly does no harm.
Basically I’m saying I’m showing up for his acting abilities and if he can carry a tune, that’s great. I’m not expecting Robert Preston or Howard Keel.
Truth be told I’m surprised it’s as good as it is.
Yes he can.
I was a little anxious to listen, lol. But I think he sounds good. He has a nice voice, can carry a tune, and there is a lot of character in his singing. With the visual aspect, actually seeing his expressions and watching him move, etc., I think it will be that much better. And I have no doubt that his acting will be excellent.
Would I sit around listening to this? No, but I don’t listen to Broadway soundtracks in general. And Nine has some lovely tunes in it but in my opinion the majority of the music in the show is not outstanding. So this is definitely not a soundtrack I would listen to for pleasure.
I’m relieved to hear you say that Alison. I know you love DDL and I also know you have your own opinions about actors and their singing so I was really worried it wouldn’t work for you.
Like you, in the context of the rest of his performance (ie actually seeing him expressing and gesturing) I think he’ll be great.
LOL, Craig, it’s true I can be picky. But it really has to do with the material itself.
Plus DDLs attitude about it. I’m sure the threw his all into it and has new respect for singers….unlike certain other actors who will remain nameless… :)
LOL. Yes, I’m happy to say that so far as I’ve seen he hasn’t been a putz.
don’t think he has a putzy bone in his body
