‘White Ribbon’ ties up European Film Awards
Though Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet (Un Prophete) led all films with six European Film Award nominations, Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon (Das Weisse Band) prevailed in the top prizes just as it did at Cannes earlier this year.
In addition to A Prophet, The White Ribbon beat out Andrea Arnold’s terrific Fish Tank, Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In (Låt den Rätte Komma In), Stephen Daldry’s The Reader and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire for Best European Film of 2009. In addition, Michael Haneke won Best European Director and Best European Screenplay.
Meanwhile, Tahar Rahim won Best European Actor for A Prophet and Kate Winslet won Best European Actress for The Reader.

Well, a copy of the French DVD of Mr. Haneke’s film arrived yesterday, so I will be sitting down with it tomorrow morning. Normally thi sis the kind of film that floats my boat, and I’ve actually liked a few other Haneke’s quite a bit so th eproof will be in the pudding. That said I am rather startled at these results, but not necessarily unhappy in any way.
I’m really interested in seeing the white ribbon as soon as I have a chance! It sounds like a great film.
Just watched TWR today. It is a wonderfully crafted and powerful film.
It’s beautiful to look at, a little bit unsettling and has a wrinkle or two I wasn’t expecting. Like I keep saying, I look forward to catching it again at the end of the month to pass final judgment.
