LA Film Critics predictions

Probably because she enjoys seeing me look foolish in public, Sasha Stone over at Awards Daily included me in the group of people she asked to take a stab at today’s Los Angeles Film Critics Association predictions.

I finished my list just as the first Avatargasm was washing over the internet and it caused me to make a last minute change to my pick for Best Picture. I realize this is probably silly, but it fits into my suspicions about both LAFCA and NYFCC: They’ll be different from each other, they’ll both step outside of conventional wisdom so they don’t just look like they’re following the herd and they’ll spread the love around among a bunch of movies. NY I believe will also be a bit edgier than LA. Beyond that, it’s a crap shoot as far as I’m concerned.

LAFCA is announcing in two waves today, the first will be around 12:30pm PST and will include Music/Score, Production Design, Cinematography, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Documentary, Independent/Experimental Film/Video.

The second announcement will be at 2:30pm PST and will include Actress, Actor, New Generation, Director, Animation, Foreign Language and Picture.

I’ll most likely be watching Broken Embraces as the first round of winners are announced but you can keep up with them at the LAFCA homepage or on their Twitter feed.

Check out my predictions after the jump and feel free to include your own.

The New York Film Critics Circle will be announcing bright and early tomorrow morning and I’ll post my predictions later this afternoon when the LA critics wrap up.

Predictions for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association:

  • Best Film: Avatar
  • Best Actor: Colin Firth, A Single Man
  • Best Actress: Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
  • Supporting Actor: Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
  • Supporting Actress: Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
  • Best Director: Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
  • Best Screenplay: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, A Serious Man
  • Best Documentary: Anvil! The Story of Anvil
  • Best Animated: Fantastic Mr. Fox

I changed Best Director from Quentin Tarantino to Jason Reitman between the time I submitted the list to Sasha and now. Originally I had Up in the Air as Best Film (and deep down I probably should’ve stuck with it), but if it isn’t I think they’ll still want to reward Reitman.
