NY Film Critics predictions
Call me a glutton for punishment, but here are my predictions for how the New York Film Critics Circle will play out. I made these picks a couple of days ago at the same time I made my LA picks. I’m tempted to change The Hurt Locker in light of Los Angeles swooning for it (my alternative pick is Inglourious Basterds), but I’m sticking with it.
- Best Film: The Hurt Locker
- Best Actor: Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker
- Best Actress: Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
- Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
- Supporting Actress: Mo’nique, Precious
- Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
- Best Screenplay: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, A Serious Man
- Best Animated Film: Fantastic Mr. Fox
- Best Foreign Film: A Prophet
- Best Documentary: Beaches of Agnes
Last year the NYFCC announced early afternoon NY time. My battery is running dead so I don’t have time to get the info.

Well, I will certainly be monitoring the results myself here in the NYC area. That HURT LOCKER prediction does seem to a very sound one, regardless of what LA did) and a win here would probably mean it takes over front-runner status at the Oscars. Maybe or maybe not.
* Best Film: Avatar
* Best Actor: Colin Firth
* Best Actress: Meryl Streep
* Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
* Supporting Actress: Mo’nique
* Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow
* Best Screenplay: A Serious Man
* Best Animated Film: Fantastic Mr. Fox
* Best Foreign Film: The White Ribbon
* Best Documentary: Beaches of Agnes
I went for Avatar with the LA crickets, but well…I pretty much crapped the bed in all my picks there.
Critics groups for me are pretty hard to predict. Since most of them involve some kind of enclave where the members get together and discuss it, the choices tend to be more interesting than a blind vote.
