Golden Globe noms

For the 67th year in a row, I didn’t receive a single Golden Globe nomination.

Here’s who did.

Why the opinions of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are given so much weight remains a mystery, but the show is usually fun.

  1. Those basterds. Your time will come, Craig. I see a double-nod in the lead actor category in the future.

  2. Speaking of Basterds. That’s who I’m putting my money on for BP. Waddya think? Am I just huffing glue?

  3. A little bit too much glue :) I wish you were right, but I think it’ll be “Up in the Air.” An IB win would thrill me beyond belief, though.

Am I sniffing glue to think that Gabourey Sidibe is guaranteed a win?

  4. I don’t see Basterds taking the Best Picture Globe, though that would be cool. However, the HFPA has always been starfuckers, and if they were really that keen on the movie they’d find a way to nominate someone other than Waltz. I’m guessing that award is Up in the Air’s to lose.

The Best Picture Muriel, on the other hand, seems well within Basterds’ reach. At least, that’s what it looks like from here.

  5. No BP nomation for A Serious Man yet there are Hangover and It’s Complicated sitting pretty. Sad. I hope Muriel rectifies that.

I’m picking UP in the AIR for the Oscar win…the Clooney factor could be enough for the Globe win too. If that happens, I wonder if it will make the Academy run screaming in the other direction.

  6. Good to hear, Paul, and the Muriels are the ones that really matter.

The HFPA is definitely a group of starfuckers, which is why a couple of their omissions were really striking. But I guess Clooney plus a double-dipping of Meryl was enough star-wattage for one awards ceremony this year. Plus they’ve got RDJ in there too.

  7. Alison~~

Exactly. And this starfuckery is why I don’t think Sidibe is remotely assured of a Best Actress win, even in this year’s relatively weak category. In fact, I’d say that Bullock should be considered a serious contender here, especially with two nominations this year. She’s obviously not going to beat Meryl, but I think a lot of people in Hollywood have noticed that she’s had a pretty good year, and the HFPA may want to award this even if the AMPAS doesn’t.

  8. The Eastwood nomination is a joke no?

But there are good choices here too, even if we have rub our eyes and asked if we really saw THE HANGOVER there amongt the nominees. I mourn the omission of Abbie Cornish, and applaud the naming of Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, much as the former was expected. AVATAR is a serious contender now, and I must say we may be in for something monumental, especially with that NY Critics Online Award for Best Picture among its gathering plaudits. ADVENTURELAND would have been a stronger choice than 500 DAYS, but again that’s just my opinion. Helen Mirren and Chris Plummer was solid choices, and the scores for UP and A SINGLE MAN was most deserved.

I need to study it all further though.

  9. Sam you should be delighted that Invictus itself didn’t get a nomination.

  10. “Sam you should be delighted that Invictus itself didn’t get a nomination.”

You hit it on the nose Craig! I was getting a little greedy there, but how true.

  11. Oh yes, then there’s IT’S COMPLICATED. But lest I attempt to pass unfair judgement, I didn’t see this film. Has anyone else done so, if I might ask?

  12. I haven’t seen it myself, but I have to admit right up front that Nancy Meyers isn’t really my cup of tea. My opinion of it will likely be useless, though Streep just might get me to watch anything she’s in.

  13. Supposed to see it tonight, but I’ll probably skip it and go to my little brother’s band concert instead.

  14. Ah, so neither Craig nor Matthew are fans here, but this is just the answer I expected (and wanted!) Ha! But yes, Meryl has been on fire the last several years.

  15. Film-wise these are a whole series of fairly safe, fairly easy nominations. I just can’t find much enthusiasm for them. Disappointing to not see A Serious Man or In the Loop nominated much anywhere (other than actor for ASM).

I have to admit the TV noms are more interesting this year to me. I didn’t expect to see Modern Family in there (great show with a small audience). But this is LIC so I’ll leave that there.

  16. I’m actually kind of curious about it. I enjoyed SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE, but this isn’t one I’m really feeling the need to rush out and see, especially if I have more important things to do.
