Golden Globes to Avatar: I See You

(AFP/Valerie Macon and AFP/Getty Images/Kevin Winter)

So, here are the Golden Globes.

I didn’t see James Cameron winning for Best Director or Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock reversing Drama and Comedy/Musical Actress awards from how conventional wisdom suggested it would go down. I was rooting for Kathryn Bigelow, but you have to admit Cameron pulled off something big with Avatar and I’m not sure how many others could’ve done it.

Also, if there were any doubts in your mind about Jeff Bridges’ chances to win the Oscar, surely the standing ovation he got tonight from all his peers puts them to rest.

Finally, I really stiffed the predictions tonight. I got 3 of 14 right and 2 of those were the most obvious. Had I guessed the Cecil B. DeMille, I probably would’ve gotten it wrong too.

  1. Totally OT, but damn was Tucci genius in “The Lovely Bones.” I officially switched my vote from Waltz to Tucci — f’ing amazing.

  2. Tucci was great. So was Ronan. What’d you think of the rest of the movie?

  3. Gave it an A-. I’m saddened by the critical response, to be honest. I think it was a fair adaptation (script could have been better), and Jackson did let his fancy go a bit too far at times, but the moments when it works, it works. Very moving, not deplorable like Ebert described it (okay, Roger, so your idea of heaven doesn’t match Jackson’s . . . so then the movie doesn’t work? come on).

And to say that I didn’t hate Mark Whalberg is the movie and Jackson’s greatest achievement.

ETA: Ronan, as always, is terrific. She has a bright future ahead of her.

  4. If this writing award keeps Reitman from getting the Director nod, I’ll be able to live with it. It did have some funny lines.

  5. Reitman: Yeah, that was a BS pick, and I say that as a guy who liked the movie.

Bones.: Jackson’s fancy bits didn’t bother me too much. The main thing that kept me from loving it was the parents who felt kind of flat to me.

  6. I liked Up in the Air too, but beating Basterds makes my head hurt.

  7. Beating District 9 and Hurt Locker is wrong too

  8. Course, could have been worse. Could have been Nancy Meyers.

Wow, they gave Reitman time to make an ass out of himself but they played Haneke off after like 30 seconds. This is the Hollywood FOREIGN Press. You’d think they’d give Best Foreign Film at least 45 seconds.

  9. Haneke isn’t a big enough star.

Also am I the only one who can’t keep Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift and Taylor Hicks straight?

  10. I thought that was a Jonas brother.

  11. Taylor Jonas.

I loved Tucci, but I’m happy to see Waltz win.

  12. YAY! Waltz wins and gives an amazing speech. Sadly, I have a feeling this is the Basterds consolation award.

  13. I can’t wait for the Scorsese tribute. Here’s hoping for some nice clips, though they’re not safe for network tv

    -You fucked my wife?
-I’m here to fucking amuse you?
-It’s the way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future . . .

    Etc.

  14. Agreed Joel, and I’m at peace with that.

    lol Dorothy.

  15. I wonder if Thelma edited Scorsese’s clip package.

  16. Haha Dorothy.

“This is the Hollywood FOREIGN Press. You’d think they’d give Best Foreign Film at least 45 seconds.”

It’s the HOLLYWOOD foreign press. They’re Yankophiles.

  17. Like Craig, I’m a sucker for montages. And that one was great, methinks.

  18. Montage gave me chills.

Also, The Golden Globe for best grilled cheese sandwich goes to the one I just ate.

  19. Loved the Marty tribute.

    (Hi guys)

  20. hahaha…”unless the next man is Mel Gibson….”

  21. Joke of the evening.

  22. Hi JB!

  23. bah Cameron

  24. I wish Bigelow had taken it. I hope this is not a sign of things to come on Oscar night.

  25. I thought he was going to keep it short. And did he really just speak Na’vi??

  26. Can’t believe they gave it to Cameron…oh wait, I can.

The Marty clip package was great but we did need an entire ad for Shutter Island in there? I’ve gone months avoiding every trailer only to have the Globes spoil it for me. Damn them.

Marty gave a great speech. Leave it to Scorsese to turn his entire speech into a call for preserving films. Love that guy.

  27. I guess it makes the race more interesting, but bah. She had the harder job, and Tarantino had the most imaginative, visionary auteurship of the bunch.

  28. Is it just me or does Harrison Ford look like he’s going to go on a killing spree every time the camera is on him?

  29. hahaha…he’s too stoned to hurt anyone.

  30. The Hangover was more musical than funny.

  31. I need to see The Hangover to figure out if I agree with Craig or the rest of the world.

  32. I wish they’d stop reminding people that Arnold is my governor.

Yes, JB. You do. Everyone else has.

  33. I’m totally going to start saying Avahdah like Arnie just did.

  34. RDJ: gratuitous =/= gracious

  35. RDJ is awesome.

  36. OK that RDJ speech was more entertaining than his film was.

  37. Haven’t seen “Crazy Heart,” but I’m so glad to see Jeff Bridges up there. Man, it’s the Dude!

  38. I hated Crazy Heart, but I’m not sorry to see Bridges win. He was great in it.

  39. To me it looks very much like “Tender Mercies.” I maybe wrong, but . . . that’s what I take from the story.

I think “Avatar” will win best pic. I had predicted “The Hurt Locker” and would love it or “IB” to win, though.

  40. Wow, gratuitous is Ahnold making bad jokes about the California economy while simultaneously introducing a movie that cost more than some small third world countries’ GDP.

Avatar it is. Oh well, at least it wasn’t Up in the Air.

  41. RDJ was the highlight of the evening, followed by Ricky Gervais (or at least the five times they let him on stage).

  42. Ah, Out of Sight. Thanks, Craig, for giving me something to put Up in the Air and Avatar out of my mind this evening…

  43. Like it or not, Avatar deserves an award for something. It wasn’t my pick, but then I don’t get to vote.

  44. have to say that there were a few interesting choices. Dissapointed that IB didn’t get anything beside the Supporting role… I definately have to watch Crazy Heart and I’m probably the last person in the world yet to see Avatar.

I’m also dissapointed that 500 Days didn’t get any awards. One of my fav films this year but Robert Downey did a great job in SH.

  45. I’m glad there were a few surprises. Would rather have seen different winners in many categories, but the only one I was really against was screenplay for UitA.

  46. After Sandra Bullock winning though, I started hoping I’d wake up and discover Patrick Duffy in my shower.

Then James Cameron won and I realized I’d either stepped into the wayback machine by accident or THIS WAS ALL REAL!!!

I’m happy for RDJ. He made that movie bearable.

  47. I believe that Tarantino deserved the screenplay award. The script was great but I guess the foreign press had a different view.

  48. “the only one I was really against was screenplay for UitA.”

Two words, Craig: Nancy. Meyers. It can always be worse.

  49. I really thought both IB and Nine would make a better showing with the foreign journos. Ah well.

  50. So did I. I forgot that James Cameron trumps foreign affiliation with the Hollywood Foreign Press. My racing form is way out of date.

  51. I wonder who did the Scorsese clip, which I thought was thoughtfully prepared in an emotional progression. The DeNiro DeCaprio tribute was appropriately inappropriate, as well.

Ricky Gervais certainly was a bit subversive, which made the show bearable. However, the president of the HFPA didn’t seem to appreciate it.

Do we have to sit through another Mo’Nique speech where she thanks God? I mean Jesus, that’s so 90s.

I think Meryl and Sandra are in a tight race. Maybe that’ll be the Oscar cliffhanger, as Bridges, Mo’Nique and Walz are pretty well set.

It seems like Avatar’s to lose at this point. We’ll see what develops in the coming weeks. I think the reason Reitman seemed so unhappy when Cameron won is because he was thinking, “There goes the best picture Oscar.” We’ll see.

I was surprised by Nine’s loss, RDJ’s win and — of course, Cameron. If Avatar wins the Oscar, I hope Bigelow still wins director.

  52. I’d love to see Bigelow win the Oscar and I still think her chances are good. I’m not convinced the Academy is ready to make Cameron King of the World twice, but he’s got momentum now and Avatar is making news right now. Hurt Locker isn’t.

The Scorsese clip didn’t feel like Schoonmaker’s editing to me, but I’m curious to hear who put that together.

  53. For those who missed it — or want to relive it, here’s Gervais at last night’s Globes:

  54. As Joel noted elsewhere, the only false note of the Scorsese tribute was the Shutter Island plug.

I still think Bigelow is in good shape for the directing Oscar, but Avatar seems more and more inevitable as best film.

I thought Gervais was pretty great. I was wondering how he’d do as a 2nd tier celebrity. Whether his outsideryness would be a benefit or if it would hurt him like it did with Letterman all those years ago. I think it worked for him.
