Oscars

Historically, I’m not great at making Oscar predictions, but I can’t resist doing it. I don’t think there is anything out of the ordinary in my upper ballot predictions, though I know if it really turns out to be a Hurt Locker night as I’m expecting that it will probably also win screenplay.

Down ballot is another matter and that’s where my picks will be made or broken. Few agree with me on my picks for the shorts or the foreign film.

We shall see.

  1. Some bold predictions in there (SHERLOCK, AJAMI). I’m assuming you think “Avatar” will win visuals?

  2. Yeah, I’m not so sure about SHERLOCK, but I applaud you for your bold prediction of AJAMI.

But I am exactly with you on your first 13 predictions here!!! Unbelievable!!! Anyone conducting Oscar pools this years will seemingly find few mis-calls throughout the line-up.

  3. Thanks for the heads up Free. Visuals feel like even more of a lock than Mo’Nique and Waltz. I just forgot them.

I agree Sherlock is pushing it, though I think a lot of people are judging the movie and not the work itself when they discount it.

Ajami, I just can’t see past my feeling it’s the best of the bunch. The worst way to pick a winner I know, but I think this year is something of a tossup anyway.

  4. I could see them spreading the love by giving Avatar Best Picture and Bigelow Best Director, but your guess is as good as mine.

  5. I agree, W.J. This is one year where I’m kind of expecting a BP-Director split.

  6. I could see a split too, but honestly I can’t think of a single logical reason that they’d go for Avatar. The Globes did and the box office did. That’s it. Otherwise there is no evidence of any kind of broad Avatar support.

Of course, we’re talking about an amorphous body of eating, drinking, shitting, feeling human beings and logic doesn’t always apply so anything is possible. I won’t be stunned if Avatar or Basterds or something else wins, but without a compelling reason to predict that they actually will, I’m going to have to stick with Hurt Locker.

  7. Yes, hopefully the continuing ridiculous “kerfuffle” won’t hurt The Hurt Locker‘s chances.

  8. Not a chance. It’s just Oscar season stupidity.

Sucks to be the guy who got his tickets taken away, but that’s pretty much the end of it.

  9. Yeah, I felt kind of bad for him but…c’est la vie.

  10. I must be an ogre because I feel no sympathy for the guy. He broke the rules and paid the price. I’m not a fan of mitigation that argues that because less obvious (clumsy) examples of rule breaking are widespread he should receive greater leniency. Then again, I’m not advocating he get burned at the stake or have a stake plunged into his heart. It’s a small change misdemeanor at best, but what is the point of such rules (which in principle promote desirable behavior) if individuals flouting them don’t suffer more than a hand slap?
