When I reviewed Argentina’s The Secret in Their Eyes back in November, I had no idea the film would go on to win the Oscar for best foreign language film, but there it is.

It tells the story of Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darin who is terrific), a retired criminal court investigator who uses an unsolved murder from his past as raw material for a novel he’s struggling to write. When he reaches out to his old superior who is also his ex-lover for help, old wounds both romantic and professional are reopened.

Can he finally solve the case that has haunted him for 25 years and also get the girl or is the past better left buried?

Juan Jose Campanella’s The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos) opens April 16th.

  1. Well, Im argentinian and I love this movie…but the Oscar took me for surprise too. I really like the photograph you have of Peter Sellers as Mandrake- Dr. Strangelove is one of the best comedies I ever seen-

  2. Any fan of Dr. Strangelove is welcome at Living in Cinema any time.

Until I saw Ajami, I thought Secret had a good chance as the most accessible of all the films, but I let my heart overrule my head and I predicted WRONG.

  3. That trailer makes it look a lot more exciting that it really is.

Of the five nominees, it was my least favorite. I found it pretty bland and conventional, and therefore the perfect winner in this category given its track record. I know it has its fans though. I’m just not one of them.

  4. It was the least challenging of the nominees which is why it one, but I also found it very entertaining. It mixed genres very well and not knowing a single thing about it before I saw it, it managed to keep me surprised and entertained.

  5. Thank you for the answer!
