“You’ve done some bad things, sweetie.”

Here’s another one you’re going to want to keep an eye out for. It’s one of those handfuls of festival films that the fanboy set latches on to. Last year it was the grossly overrated Bronson, but this time they’re actually on to something. Animal Kingdom is pretty good stuff.

From Australia, it’s the harrowing tale of a young man who goes to live with his grandmother and her family of criminals after his mother dies of an overdose. At first the criminal life is fun and games, but before long the kid is in way over his head.

Guy Pearce plays a cop looking to put the family away, but Jacki Weaver steals the show as grandma.

Animal Kingdom opens August 13.

  1. Just saw it. Was wondering what my film blog friends thought. I loved it. Jacki Weaver needs a Supporting Actress campaign. She’s fantastic.

  2. Interesting – I just saw it this afternoon as well. I’m glad I didn’t let it slip by (it was either this or Mesrine Part 1). If this were directed by a bigger name or had more recognizable names, I think it would be making a huge splash stateside.

  3. I suck for not writing a proper review of it.

    Weaver is amazing.

  4. I just wrote an article about it (Weaver in particular) on my blog.
