Unless you lived in Washington in the late ’80s and early ’90s like I did, you probably have no idea who Booth Gardner is. Suffice it to say he was Washington’s 2-term Republican governor and instantly forgettable as far as history is concerned. Unfortunately for Mr. Gardner, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1994, just a year after leaving office. In 2008, he returned to the political spotlight as an unlikely Republican supporter of Washington State’s right to die ballot initiative.
The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner, which follows Gardner as he spends a year stumping for the initiative, was nominated for an Oscar last year in the Documentary Short category. It premiers on Wednesday on HBO2. Click here for details.
