The executive branch the Academy visual effects branch has pared the visual effects Oscar down to fifteen competitors.  They’ll take another whack at in in January to get it down to 7 and then the full committee will vote for the finalists based on viewing 15 minute excerpts of each film.

Sight unseen, I’m going to put my money on Tron: Legacy for the win. I’m also glad to see Scott Pilgrim get recognized even if it doesn’t make it as a final nominee. I don’t know if the effects were groundbreaking, but they were very imaginatively used.

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • Clash of the Titans
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Hereafter
  • Inception
  • Iron Man 2
  • The Last Airbender
  • Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Scott Pilgrim vs the World
  • Shutter Island
  • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
  • Tron: Legacy
  • Unstoppable

  1. Okay, so I guess I’m going to be the only one discussing special effects xD

I’m a little iffy with the 15 films in the shortlist, considering it includes Percy Jackson, Prince of Persia, Apprentice and Clash of the Titans xD

Also, the Narnia effects looked really off-putting to me… in the 2D version at least.

I think Inception and Tron (speculation here) are pretty much shoo-ins. In terms of Alice VFX, I’d rather it get an art direction nod, than effects…

I was really bugged with Scott Pilgrim as a character, but I absolutely loved the use of motion graphics – though I’m not sure how much those would be considered effects… or if they’d be considered art direction. I’d be thrilled if it makes the list of 3s.

Oscar might want to do a subtle effect like in Shutter Island… or give a nod to Harry Potter.

  2. I’m assuming this is Inception’s award to lose. Tron will have to totally blow the doors off the Academy to beat out Inception at this point, in my humble opinion.

  3. The question is Amy, are there any movies you’d have rather seen on the list instead of the lame ones you mentioned?

It’s on like Donkey Kong, Joel. If I win, you owe me a Coke.
