Weinstein nabs silent romance The Artist in advance of its Cannes debut
Directed by Michel Hazanavicius who also did the OSS 117 spy spoofs, The Artist features OSS 117 stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. He plays an actor on the decline during Hollywood’s waning silent era and she’s an actress on the rise and it sounds like it’s played straight, not as a spoof. John Goodman, Penelope Ann Miller and James Cromwell co-star. (6:35 pm) (Deadline)

His name is Val Lauren. (6:30 pm) (THR)

Eckhart, Bean, Robb join former Guillermo del Toro “Pan” project
It’s a spin on the Peter Pan tale with the Captain Hook character recast as a police detective on the trail of “a childlike kidnapper.” Uh. Whatever. Good cast though. Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean and AnnaSophia Robb are all solid.  (6:20 pm) (Playlist via Screen Daily)

Woody Harrelson is your Haymitch Abernathy
If you’re a fan of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games, you’ll know what that means. John C. Reilly had recently been rumored for the role, but his people quickly denied. (6:15 pm) (THR)

Jean Reno joins Tyler Perry’s reboot of James Patterson’s Alex Cross series
You probably already forgot that Tyler Perry was rebooting the Alex Cross series and I wouldn’t blame you. For the record, it’s called I, Alex Cross. (3:05 pm) (Variety)

Trailer: Real Steel
Rocky Socky Robots. DreamWorks is so sure about this one they’re already working on a sequel even though the first won’t come out until November. Hugh Jackman is a former boxer who is phased out when fights are taken over by robots. What’s an out of work boxer to do? Become a robot fight promoter with an underdog scrap of metal for a fighter, overcome all odds and earn the love of a little boy – all set to an uplifting soundtrack, naturally. Anthony Mackie and Evangeline Lily costar. Probably going to be huge. Eh. (10:40 am) (Yahoo)

Sonnenfeld, Morrison teaming up on comic/movie Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens
I love the work Barry Sonnenfeld did as a cinematographer in his early Coen Brothers days, Addams Family was ok and I know everyone loves Men in Black, but the guy is still kind of in movie jail as far as I’m concerned thanks to stuff like Wild Wild West. Anyway, he’s getting together with noted comic book guy Grant Morrison for a comic and movie about a prehistoric alien invasion. Luckily for the fate of Earth, dinosaurs were smarter than we think. (10:15 am) (Deadline)

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis team up on indie drama Still I Rise
Ok, that’s just a working title, but it’s about two women who work to clean up a struggling inner-city school. Expected to begin shooting later this month (9:40 am) (Deadline)

He’ll play Gotti’s mentor, a Gambino family underboss. (9:30 am) (THR)

  1. I’d comment that Harrelson is good casting for Haymitch, except that I’m afraid then you’d make fun of me for reading material with these kinds of character names…

  2. You didn’t make up the names… or DID you?

  3. I’d never confess to that.

  4. Vee have vays of making you talk

  5. Perhaps they could cast Reilly in a different part. Maybe Haymitch needs a comic-relief cowboy sidekick. Or maybe I just want a reprise of the “Bad Jokes” scene from PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION.

  6. Haha. Maybe that’ll make it onto the Hunger Games DVD, Paul. We can hope, right?

  7. haha Paul.

Most movies would be better with a part for John C. Reilly in them. I like that dude more and more.
