Trailer: Statham, Owen, De Niro and The Scorpions in The Killer Elite

All the news that fits, updated throughout the day:

In case you need another Captain America: The First Avenger trailer
Yahoo is happy to hook  you up. Actually, it looks better than any of the other superhero movies so far this summer, but that’s not really saying much. (Yahoo)

Shall we play a game… again?
MGM is currently in the process of remaking everything else, so why not War Games? Seth Gordon (The King of Kong) is lined up to direct. (Deadline)

Bio of Beach Boy Brian Wilson in the works
Oren Moverman (The Messenger) is writing the screenplay (Deadline)

Gosling rumored to reteam with Refn on Only God Forgives
Here’s my review of star Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn’s first effort together, Drive. Read about their next project at Twitch.

James McAvoy “in early talks” to star in Danny Boyle’s Trance
Last I heard, McAvoy’s X-Men: First Class co-star Michael Fassbender was in negotiations for the role, but he’s passed. The film is a remake of a 2003 British art heist film described by THR thusly: “An assistant at an auction house masterminds the heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the painting’s location is and after his continued failure to remember, the gang begins to suspect duplicity on his part and hire a female hypnotist to get into his brain.” (Variety)

Julia Ormond in talks to play Superman’s mom for Zack Snyder

David O. Russell testing actresses to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in The Silver Linings Playbook
It’s the usual roster of wanted Hollywood actresses: Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough and Olivia Wilde. Throw in Jennifer for good measure. Russell and Wahlberg were both tipped for this project back in May. Vulture described Matthew Quick’s 2008 source novel at the time as the story of “a delusional former high school history teacher who’s just been released into the custody of his mom. Believing that he’s only been away for a few months instead of the four years he just spent in a mental institution, the teacher sets about wooing back his ex-wife.” (THR)

Best seller Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand to hit the big screen
Described by Amazon as a “wry, yet optimistic comedy of manners with a romantic twist” Helen Simonson’s debut novel tells the story of a widowed British army major who falls for a Pakistani shopkeeper as she helps him keep a prized family heirloom out of the hands of greedy relatives. (Deadline)

Super 8 kid Joel Courtney in negotiations to play Tom Sawyer
Yes, apparently they’re planning to shoot Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn in Bulgaria. Sounds fishy. Anyway, Courtney is also up for a part in the supernatural indie The Healer. Not bad for a kid you hadn’t even heard of until about 5 minutes ago in cinematic time. (Variety)

Sofia Vergara pulls out of Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy
Filming on the indie about an unlawfully imprisoned death row inmate was pushed back a week and it would conflict with Vergara’s gig on TV’s (surprisingly as good as advertised) Modern Family. (Deadline)

Wow. Could Cars 2 turn out to be the first ever “rotten” Pixar flick?
As of this writing it’s pulling 44% when every other Pixar movie ranked in the 90s (except the first Cars which was 74%). It won’t matter. Cars 2 is going to make piles of money and sell even more toys. We can all sleep well at night knowing Disney’s happy. (Rotten Tomatoes)

(above) Trailer: Statham, Owen and De Niro in The Killer Elite
The funny part of this trailer is that when the music kicked in, I laughed because it sounded like they were ripping off The Scorpions’ “Rock You Like a Hurricane” when in fact they just went ahead and bought the song. I hate The Scorpions and this almost looks like a parody, from Clive Owen’s unfortunate facial hair (he looks like a dude who’d be wearing a t-shirt that says “Mustache rides: 15 cents”) right down to the sleepwalking Robert De Niro and post-Summer release date.
