“Am I not a man? And is a man not stupid? I’m a man, so I married.
Wife, children, house, everything. The full catastrophe.” – Zorba the Greek
Michael Cacoyannis, Director: 1921 – 2011

News, nuggets and notables updated throughout the day.

G.D. Spradlin, character actor: 1920 – 2011
Oklahoma-born Gervais Duan Spradlin was an attorney and an oil man before transitioning to actor in the 1960s with a string of film and television appearances to follow. He had memorable turns in two films by Francis Ford Coppola, the first as Nevada Senator Pat Geary in The Godfather Part II and then as the general in Apocalypse Now who sends Martin sheen up the river. They’re both tiny parts in huge films but unforgettable. In a lesser known role that I remember well thanks to cable, he played the evil southern sheriff opposite James Garner in Tank. (THR)

Liev Schrieber joins Toni Colette’s Mental
This is the one I told you about back in May that reunites Colette with her Muriel’s Wedding director PJ Hogan. (Variety – firewall)

Sarah Palin’s Undefeated officially defeated
This is yesterday’s news but I didn’t feel like crowing about it at the time. Basically, the glorified campaign ad for the currently unemployed losing 2008 VP candidate pretty much stiffed upon release 2 weeks ago when it pulled in around 65K on 10 screens, but the film’s producers tried to spin that as a positive in light of the film having zero in the way of traditional advertising and (so they claim) because it played in smaller venues leading to a smaller per screen average. Well they increased the number of theaters by 4 last weekend but the box office take still cratered a perilous 62%. While still trying to spin this as a win, the producers have now decided to rush the propagan-doc to VOD where they hope cheap and lazy fans of Caribou Barbie will turn away from Bachelorette and fork over 1o bucks to watch Undefeated from the comfort of their own living rooms. Either way, as far as theatrical is concerned, this one is officially a failure, just like the candidate. (THR)
