Elmo came along long after my days as a Sesame Street watcher so I never felt the cutesie magic, but I’ve known plenty of little kids who adore him and it’s hard to deny the gently sweet appeal.

Whether you find Elmo cute or annoying, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey is apparently a doc to watch. The story of the man behind the puppet was a big hit at Sundance in January where it walked off with the Special Jury Prize for documentaries.

It opens in NY on October 21.

  1. I’ve always seen Elmo as more of an annoyance than a cute Muppet, but that’s mostly because I’m old(ish), childless (by choice) and a usually a tad bit cranky about such things (like children and puppets). But since this doc is more about the puppeteer and the details behind the creation of the puppet than the puppet itself, it looks interesting and I want to see it. Maybe I’ll end up liking Elmo after all.

  2. I was trying to figure out a good way to say Elmo can suck it, but I wanna see this anyway. You pretty much nailed it.

  3. With my own brood pulling away from the age that had them watching Elmo and the likes, I can’t help but express more fondness for these characters and for their talented beloved creator.

    Who can honestly resist this?

    I’ll be there.
