For the most part, this remake of Iceland’s Reykjavik-Rotterdam about a former criminal who gets dragged back into the business looks to be a pretty ordinary genre thriller. On the other hand, it’s got a solid cast including Mark Wahlberg, Giovani Ribisi, J.K. Simmons, Lukas Haas, Kate Beckinsale and Ben Foster. Also, actor turned director Baltasar Kormakur (who starred in the original) made waves on the festival circuit a decade ago with his directorial debut 101 Reykjavik.

I haven’t seen 101 Reykjavik or Reykjavic-Rotterdam so I don’t have much to go on besides this just-ok trailer, but a half interesting b-grade thriller can go a long way in the cold cinematic month of January when this one hits theaters.

  1. I thought 101 REYKJAVIK exhibited a most interesting convergence of styles and some effective deadpan humor. So any new work from this director warrants investigation at least.

  2. This seems pretty… ordinary though, doesn’t it?

  3. Yeah, nothing ground-breaking here, and certainly not a film that I’d praise to the heavens. Still, I’d say 3 1/2 of 5.

  4. It’s been roundly dismissed on the internets, but based on the pedigree, I’m willing to give it a shot.

  5. I saw Reykjavic-Rotterdam at PIFF a couple years ago. There’s about 3 seconds of this trailer that looks anything like the plot of the original, so this may be a remake in concept only. It might be interesting to compare the two, but the original is really just a competent B-movie and this remake appears to be grasping for little more than that.

  6. An American remake that actually tries to improve on a foreign original?? Say it isn’t so!

  7. Not sure if you’re being facetious, but this trailer doesn’t look like it’s improving on anything to me.
