They’re still trying to sell this to people who aren’t necessarily fans of Taxi Driver or Goodfellas, which makes a lot of sense, but I’m still trying to reconcile my idea of Martin Scorsese with how ordinary they’re making him seem in what we’ve seen of Hugo so far. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and I’m very curious to see what Scorsese does with it. It’s just the trailers that are giving me pause. This one is an improvement over the first, but if Scorsese’s name wasn’t on it, I have to admit I wouldn’t even be giving it a second thought.

Having said all that, the response to the screening of the unfinished film at NYFF was pretty stellar all around with special attention paid to the remarkable use of 3D. I have to admit I’m still skeptical about that last part, but we’ll see.
