Malcolm Leo is directing a documentary on Jerry Garcia based largely on a 3-hour interview Leo conducted with the founding member of The Grateful Dead in 1987. The hope is for a Spring 2012 release.

The Deadline report doesn’t say what kind of music rights the filmmakers have procured but points out that talent agency ICM “has been granted unprecedented access to the seminal band’s music catalog” and has a narrative feature planned around the songs.

The interview could be compelling as hell and will probably be a must-see for fans, but without the music, it’s only telling a small part of the story.
