Paul Giamatti will play Friar Lawrence, pretty much the main guy to blame in the whole star-cross’d lovery mess. His intentions are good, but he’s the guy who sets up the marriage between Romeo and Juliet in the hope of ending the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets in the first place and he’s also the bright boy who comes up with the fake suicide idea which turns out all O happy dagger-y when a messenger fails to fill Romeo in on the plan in time.

Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is of course Juliet while Douglas Booth (Pillars of the Earth) is Romeo. Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Let Me In) is his cousin and BFF Benvolio while Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow, J. Edgar) will play Juliet’s cousin Tybalt.

Romeo and Juliet directed by Carlo Carlei begins shooting in Italy next month.

  1. I’m glad your first sentence clarified Giamatti’s role. The headline had me thinking he was Romeo to Steinfeld’s Juliet. Which would be…odd casting.

  2. I thought that might be confusing, but I was trying to cut the headline to the essence and the three things that matter are Giamatti, Steinfeld and the play.
