So… Ensemble, Actress and Supporting Actress for The Help. No real surprises, though I didn’t see a lot of people besides me predicting Jean Dujardin. Whatever else you might think of The Artist, Dujardin was the best part of it. Overall I got 4 out of 5 right, missing out on Viola Davis for lead actress.

What did we learn tonight? Mostly only that if you want to win awards, go ahead and shit in a pie, but God help you if you shit in the sink.

  1. I also called Dujardin, and was thrilled he won, but like you I missed Viola Davis, predicting a Streep win instead.

I don’t dislike THE HELP like so many others, but this kind of showing is rather an embrassment for SAG.

  2. I was not surprised by Davis and it was only inability to pick between her and Streep that led me to split the vote and go for Williams.

You and I disagree on just how good The Artist is, but we can totally agree that Dujardin won.

  3. I should add that as much as I hated The Help, Davis was wonderful in it.

  4. I’d figured Davis would be more likely than Streep to win the SAG, but Dujardin was a pleasant surprise.\

At this point it would seem odd if Streep won the Oscar though I’d be happy to see it.

At least Jessica Chastain didn’t go home empty handed like she will on Oscar night.

No offense to Betty White — who still knows how to work the room — but I think they’re gonna keep giving awards to her ’til the day she’s buried — and then maybe even a posthumous one.

  5. The results of the SAG Awards show us 4 things:
    Best Sup. Actress is over
    Best Sup. Actor is over
Best Actress is 80% Davis – 20% Streep. Iron Lady Is simply NOT as liked as THE HELP.
Best Actor is….my God we have the absolute tie!!It will be THE thriller of the night ( a Murray – Penn repeat). I just cannot predict a winner now. However at Oscar night there are 2 awards that will help us decide. If THE ARTIST wins Editing and Screenplay then Dujardin is a winner.

  6. Yes it’s harder and harder to see voters getting over the double whammy of how terrible Iron Lady is and also the (partly unfair) sense that Streep isn’t really doing anything we’ve already seen her do.

  7. how terrible Iron Lady is

What kept it interesting for me was the examination of Thatcher’s dementia, the back-and-forth in time.
