Withnail & I (1987) written and directed by Bruce Robinson
Richard E. Grant as Withnail (right) and Paul McGann as “I” (left)

I: You know what we should do? I say, you know what we should do?
Withnail: How can I possibly know what we should do? What should we do?
I: Get out of here for a while. Get into the countryside. Rejuvenate.
Withnail: Rejuvenate. I’m in a park and I’m practically dead. What good is the countryside?

  1. Man, you’re so often hitting upon films in this quote series that have a special place in my personal film history. One of my favorite comedies and worthy of the enduring cult following it inspired.

  2. This quote had special appeal to me because I’ve found the last several months, particularly the holidays, have led to an excess of drinking and eating poorly and I’d really started to feel the ill effects. I think I’ve rallied now, but this seemed like a timely quote.

I’m going back and revisiting some of my favorites from high school and early college days and obviously you and I shared a similar cinematic track.

I can’t be sure, but I suspect you’ll get a charge out of tomorrow’s offering as well.

    We shall see.

  3. Whenever I watch this movie nowadays, sooner or later I always say to myself– “They picked the wrong guy to play the Doctor”.

  4. You’re thinking Richard E. Grant for Dr. Who?

The scarf in this pic helps complete the illusion.

  5. The ironic thing is McGann looks more like an authentic Doctor in that pic than he does in the strained BBC/Fox pilot he starred in. I do think he’d have made a decent time lord given enough time with the role, but Christ– late 80′s Richard E. Grant is perfect.

  6. The only things I’ve ever seen McGann in besides this are Empire of the Sun and Alien 3. I look forward to checking out Luther but haven’t gotten around to it.

Seems like we haven’t heard from Richard E. Grant for a while. This needs to be corrected.

  7. Craig, I thought his character was poorly written in Luther. He is great in Our Mutual Friend.
