Dinner at Eight (1933) directed by George Cukor
Marie Dressler as Carlotta Vance
Carlotta: What a city! I left the hotel at eleven this morning a young and lovely girl… now look at me.

Dinner at Eight is packed full of great lines and so many of them come from Marie Dressler as Carlotta Vance. But with this screenplay, Cukor as the director and a cast that includes Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Bilile Burke and Jean Harlow, how can you lose? This is absolutely on my desert island list and probably in the top five.
Marie had a lot of great reactions too, but they don’t translate so well quote wise. At the end where Jean Harlow announces that she’s read a book and Marie kind of stumbles.
Good stuff.
Right! I’m kookoo for this movie.
Great movie for the reasons you’ve both mentioned. Jean Harlow sure had screen siren sex appeal.
