The Wicker Man (1973) Directed by Robin Hardy.
Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle and Edward Woodward as Sergeant Howie.

Summerisle: We don’t commit murder here. We’re a deeply religious people.
Howie: Religious? With ruined churches… no ministers, no priests… and children dancing naked?
Summerisle: They do love their divinity lessons.
Howie: But they are… are naked!
Summerisle: Naturally. It’s much too dangerous to jump through fire with their clothes on.
Howie: What religion can they possibly be learning jumping over bonfires?
Summerisle: Parthenogenesis.
Howie: What?
Summerisle: Literally, as Miss Rose would doubtless say in her assiduous way, reproduction without sexual union.
Howie: Oh, what is all this? I mean, you’ve got fake biology, fake religion… Sir, have these children never heard of Jesus?
Summerisle: Himself the son of a virgin impregnated, I believe, by a ghost. Do sit down, Sergeant. Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent.

  1. Yes the horror icon Lee has reached a remarkable age, and this atmospheric horror classic deserves highlighting, especially for those lines!

  2. I’d never actually seen it until I watched it for this entry. What a strange little film, but good. Both Lee and Woodward are terrific.

  3. This is a really good movie, one of the better horror movies. It’s really chilling and horrifying and sad. And the music is terrific. If you haven’t seen the uncut version I highly recommend it – one of the best songs was cut when they released it in theaters, but if you buy the DVD you get both versions.

Christopher Lee is great in this (and great generally). It’s kind of hilarious to see him with that hairstyle, too.

  4. Creepy as hell! And deliciously anti-religious!

  5. It is really anti-religious. And yet at the end you feel sorry for Howie.

Woodward is so good in that role.

  6. Yes, you do feel bad for Howie. It’s hard to watch a man whose most firmly held beliefs are ultimately no help whatsoever. At the same time, he never gives up through to the end.
