Vanilla Sky (2001) Written and directed by Cameron Crowe from the film Abre Los Ojos. Tom Cruise as David Aames

David (voiceover): My dreams are a cruel joke. They taunt me. Even in my dreams I’m an idiot who knows he’s about to wake up to reality. I can only avoid sleep… and I can’t. I try to tell myself what to dream. I try to dream that I’m flying, something free. It never works.

  1. Looks like Cruise (and Katie) has been getting the gossip columnist treatment the last several days. Excellent choice here for sure. I think my two favorite Cruise performances are the ones he gave in MAGNOLIA and BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.

  2. this is an underrated Cruise performance. The film itself is a mixed bag, but Cruise is perfectly cast here.

EWS, Rain Man, 4th of July, Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, De Palma’s MI, Collateral, Minority Report. He’s done some amazing work.

  3. I’m not a big Cruise fan but I thought he was perfectly cast in Magnolia and The Color of Money. I also admired his willingness to stretch himself in Eyes Wide Shut.

I enjoyed watching Vanilla Sky as a double feature with Open Your Eyes – both work in overlapping yet also very different ways.
