Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985) Directed by Tim Burton
Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman

Pee-Wee: When you’ve gone over something again and again and again and again like I have, certain questions get answered, others spring up. The mind plays tricks on you. You play tricks back. it’s like you’re unraveling a big cable knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting!

  1. This was such a fun movie. I hadn’t encountered him as a performer prior to seeing it and thought he created a unique and offbeat blend of comedic sweetness and creepiness.

  2. He was great too in a small part in the sequel to Happiness. He played the part played in the original by Jon Lovitz. On paper it’s hard for me to see what is appealing about Pee-Wee, but goddamnit if it doesn’t work. Is it the innocence?
