8 Responses to “The Golden Globe Nominations”

  1. The Globe nominations do further the mighty chances of LINCOLN if we can even perceive the Hollywood Press as having any real bearing. Tom Hooper’s Best Director snub does seem significant, but last year HUGO showed poorly at the Globes only to nab a ton of Oscar nods. Was not a big fan of SALMON FISHING, and am shocked at the nods it secured, though the performances were actually fine.

  2. I think the snubs of Hooper and Russell in the director category have as much to do with the fact that both men are pricks and HFPA vote for the people who do the most sucking up. I’ll be surprised if both men don’t get Oscar nominations.

  3. Had you asked me yesterday to name, I dunno, 25 movies I thought had a chance at a Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) nomination, I still wouldn’t have called SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN. I don’t think anybody likes SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN as much as the Golden Globe voters liked the movie’s press junket buffet… er, the movie.

Also, I wouldn’t rule out one of the two directors you mentioned (Hooper and Russell) being overlooked for Best Director. As far as I can see there are six major frontrunners right now in that category- Affleck, Bigelow, Hooper, Lee, Russell and Spielberg. Affleck and Spielberg appear to be locks, and Bigelow and Lee are previous Oscar winners who are making director-driven movies. For LES MIS, the draw seems to be more the material and performances than the filmmaking on display, and SILVER LININGS is a comedy, which tends to be overlooked sometimes in this category (for example, AS GOOD AS IT GETS).

If I was predicting the Best Director Oscar lineup today, I’d have to go with Affleck, Bigelow, Hooper, Lee and Spielberg, with Russell making do with picture and adapted screenplay. Unless we’re all wrong and SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN sweeps the Oscar as well…

  4. I hope you’re right. At this point, I’m still preparing myself for the worst possible case scenario where at least one of them gets in. I think Russell has a better shot than Hooper.

I’d add Tarantino to your front runner category which makes Russell and Hooper even more longshot-y. In fact, my absolute best-case scenario has the Globes picks going on to get Oscar nominations. It’s too much to ask that Haneke get a nomination I’m assuming.

  5. Things that make me mad:
-ParaNorman snubbed and Hotel Transylvania nominated instead.
-Eric Stonestreet being nominated for Modern Family. I’d replace him with either Woody Harrelson (Game Change), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire or Nurse Jackie)… or Ed O’Neill if we had to put in a MF actor there.
-Sofia Vergara. i prefer Julie Bowen, but I’d replace her with Cheryl Hynes (Suburgatory), Eden Sher (The Middle), kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), and there’s more….
-The Newsroom getting nominated instead of Game of Thrones or Mad Men
-Smash. I know it’s using the Musical category to its advatage. But getting nominated… seriously?
-Lena Dunham getting nominated for acting. Girls seems like a virtual lock for Best Comedy Series and Dunham might win for acting, but I’d rather not see Dunham getting the acting victory.

    Things that make me happy:

-Louis CK nominated. Yeah, he’s more popular now, but it’s still good to see him nominated. Dunno if he’ll win — the Globes gave it to LeBlanc for playing himself, so CK might stand a chance — because I expect Cheadle to win since he has the “freshman” card. Wouldn’t mind to see any of the other 5 winning.
-Damian Lewis… hope he wins this time.
-Argo and Django Unchained getting love.

  6. Also, I know SAG gave Bardem a nomination for Skyfall, but the Globes didn’t (and they could have done it with their odd choices). As extremely unlikely as this seems, I wish Bardem could get in the Supporting Actor field at the Oscars for playing Silva. Dude was a fantastic villain and easily one of the best villains I’ve seen this year (I think Hiddleston’s Loki is pretty overrated).

  7. I heard Hotel Transyvlania was terrible. I wasn’t even going to watch it. Am I wrong? Paranorman I haven’t been able to get into. It’s well done, but it’s just not clicking with me so far. I’ll try it again soon.

I didn’t even like Skyfall all that much, but I loved Bardem. I’m actually a little surprised with his international pedigree that he didn’t get recognized. Mostly this just means Sony didn’t do lavish Skyfall Q&As with free food for HFPA.

I like Dunham a lot. I think she’s a real talent, but yeah, I’m not sure acting is her strong suit. She fits the material she’s written, but….

  8. I gave HT a 2.5/5 score, but that might be because I saw it dubbed in Spanish, yet the scripting still . The biggest problem with HT was that it was a triple clash of “Sandler and pals film”, kid-friendly stuff and “overprotective father vs. dude who falls in love with the daughter”. Reviews are mixed, animation was fine, the 4-year-old brother loved it, but I felt kinda frustrated with it because it could have been better. Still more watchable than shit like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dark Shadows or Rock of Ages.

Animation-wise, I haven’t seen Wreck-It Ralph yet, but my top two faves are Frankenweenie and ParaNorman. I’d be happy if either wins. ParaNorman got sold to me as top-tier stuff near the end of the film when Norman talks to the ghost girl IIRC.

I don’t mind Dunham as a writer, but she was pretty obnoxious to watch on Girls. I know JLD is the fave to win, but Girls is the hotter commodity, so Dunham’s chances of winning increases.
