Franco Nero in Sergo Corbucci's "The Mercenary" (1968)

The Mercenary (1968) Directed by Sergio Corbucci. Franco Nero as Sergei Kowalski  and Franco Ressel as Studs

Studs: (points his gun at Kowalski) Polack! You play around with me, I’ll see that you’re gonna get murdered. You play with fire, you’re gonna get burned!
Kowalski: I wear gloves.
Studs: I don’t see them. I don’t see them!
Kowalski: I took them off because without gloves I shoot better. (drops his glass, draws and shoots the gun out of Studs’ hand before the glass hits the floor)

  1. I saw this film months ago, along with many other spaghetti westerns at a Film Forum Festival that offered many rarities and the most celebrated films of the genre. It is for me one of Corbucci’s best, right behind THE GREAT SILENCE and NAVAJO JOE. Veteran actor Tony Mussante, was on hand at the screening to introduce and moderate and the personable and enthusiastic thespian had much to say about director and some marvelous anecdotes about his casting and fond memories on the film’s sets. The film is a hoot.

  2. I haven’t seen The Great Silence. It’s next on my list. Somehow I forgot Corbucci also did Navajo Joe which I found surprisingly entertaining.

The Mercenary was solid. I hadn’t seen it before.

  3. I would say that Corbucci is second only to Leone in the spaghetti western pantheon.
