Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in Walter Hill's "48 Hrs." (1982)

48 Hrs. (1982) Directed by Walter Hill. Nick Nolte as Jack Cates and Eddie Murphy as Reggie Hammond.

Reggie: Look, if we go in there and get a phone number or Ganz or a dead Indian, anything that helps us out, turn your back for a half hour and let me go get some pussy.
Jack: What for? Any man that talks about women like you can’t get it up anyhow.
Reggie: I been in prison for three years. My dick gets hard if the wind blows.

  1. The film is enormously popular of course, and the critical response remains on the highest level. It was fun, but like all films of this kind no real keeper.

  2. I’ll take this no real keeper over many of the Oscar-sanctified tea cozies that Hollywood offers up each year any day of the week. The plot is genre fodder, but the direction is lean and ferocious, and features a canon Nick Nolte performance.

  3. Even better than LES MIZ Chuck?

  4. I always thought this news magazine was the red-headed step child of 60 Minutes.
