Duncan Jones: From ‘Moon’ to ‘Mute’

Fresh off Moon winning the Michael Powell Award for the Best New British Feature at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, ScreenDaily spoke to Duncan Jones who confirms his next project is the sci-fi mystery-thriller Mute, a UK/German co-production budgeted at $25 million (roughly five times the budget of Moon).
According to Jones, “Mute is about [...]

LAFF ‘09: The Awards

The 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival wrapped up this evening with the awards: Wah Do Dem and Those Who Remain took the Target Filmmaker Narrative and Documentary awards, while The Stoning of Soraya M., Born Without and Soul Power took the audience prizes.

And the 10 best picture nominees are…

Nikki Finke just posted a release from a press conference given this morning in Beverly Hills where Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announced that next year’s Oscars would feature 10 nominees for best picture.
This was the practice up through the 1943 ceremony, but why are they returning to it? It [...]

Golden Trailer Awards like ‘Star Trek’ too

It’s not the trailer that pops into my mind when I think of great trailers of the past year (not sure I can think of one that does), but I have to admit that the Star Trek trailer did its job in making me want to see a movie I was otherwise deeply skeptical about. [...]

Carter Burwell awarded ASCAP Career Achievement

LiC favorite Carter Burwell has somehow managed to avoid getting a single Oscar nomination for the nearly 70 feature film scores he’s composed in the last 25 years, but tonight his peers in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers saw fit to award him a career achievement award at the 24th Film and [...]

‘Gomorrah’ whacks ‘Il Divo’ at the Donatellos

At the David di Donatello Awards Friday evening, Matteo Garrone’s critically acclaimed mafia film Gomorrah took home seven golden Davids, including best film, director and screenplay. Though Paolo Sorrentino’s Il Divo also won seven of Italy’s top film prizes, including best actor Tony Servillo, best supporting actress Piera Degli Espositi and best director of photography, [...]

Waters Sill Troubled

Trouble the Water on the red carpet.
I love how the cameras just can’t help cutting away to Miley friggin’ Cyrus.
Though it lost the Oscar on Sunday night to Man on Wire, filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin and subjects Kimberly and Scott Roberts can be proud that the world was introduced to their terrific documentary [...]

Oscars Funnier than Pineapple Express

This seems to take forever to load before it streams properly and the quality isn’t great, but it’s better than the one I found on YouTube. As always with Trailer Addict, it works best if you hit play, then press pause and wait for the meter to fill up before playing:

The Watercooler: ‘Slumdog’ is Oscar’s final answer

It felt like a fairly predictable year so my 18/24 in the Oscar polling is nothing to write home about. I stiffed all the short categories (maybe I should’ve at least read the synopses if I wasn’t going to actually see the shorts?) and I missed score, foreign film and sound editing. I got the [...]

The Muriels: Best Lead Performance (Male)

The 2007 Muriels
Nyoinks, I’m going to take a lot of crap for this one.
Until this moment I completely forgot I didn’t vote for Mickey Rourke…but we’ll get to that in a moment.
First, please enjoy another edition of the Muriel Also-Rans including my argument for Penelope Cruz.
And now, the Best Male Lead Performance. Like Supporting Male [...]

‘Wrestler’ Ram Jams Spirit Awards

Film Independent handed out the Indie Spirit Awards this evening in Santa Monica for the best films produced for under $20 million. I’m especially glad to see some of the love for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Synecdoche, New York but even most of the winners I didn’t pick are worthy. Nice to see In Search [...]

The Muriels: Best Direction

From the 2007 Muriels

And now for the Muriel award for Best Direction of 2008.
My votes:

Jonathan Demme – Rachel Getting Married
Andrew Stanton – WALL-E
Arnaud Desplechin – A [...]

The Muriels: Best Cinematic Moment

Before you check out tonight’s Muriel award, have a look at the Heath Ledger-inspired tribute to a few other talents who received Muriel recognition this year but are no longer with us.
I think the Best Cinematic Moment is my favorite category, but it’s also one of the hardest to vote for. There are so many [...]

Revolutionary Road
Let the Right One In
Slumdog Millionaire

Get thee to the Muriels….

Here’s how I voted:

Out of Sight
The Thin Red Line
The Big Lebowski
Rushmore
A Bug’s Life
